5 Tips to Optimize your Social Media Strategy

Social media marketing uses social media platforms to promote or sell your product or services, but it’s so much more than that. The best way to harness the power of social media marketing is to be social. Engaging with your followers is more than just sending out ads—you can use it to express your brand personality and build lasting relationships that keep your business thriving. Anyone who sees your posts on social media is a potential client or customer, so how you represent yourself and interact on these platforms is just as important as the quality of your ads. You can boost organic reach by consistently engaging viewers with thoughtful, quality content. While it may seem like more work, trust us—it is well worth it in the long run!

Save time and maximize engagement on social media with these 5 tips:

1. Plan your content in advance

Each month, set aside a day where you can sit down and spend 3-5 hours preparing social media posts in advance for the entire month. Choose a day when you know you’ll be able to work without distractions and can focus on the  topics that you want to share with followers or people you’d want as followers. Collect images or video clips, and jot down caption ideas relevant to your business and the interests of your viewers.

 

2. Create a monthly content calendar

Mapping out your prepared social content into a monthly calendar takes all the guesswork out of social posting. With a content calendar, everything you post will be planned and scheduled in advance, so you won’t have to think about it on an ongoing basis. Start by plugging in any date-specific posts such as promotional offers that expire or holiday-related posts, and fill everything else in around those. Regular posting shows your audience that you are active and relevant, but your posting frequency will depend on your business and your social media goals. We recommend starting with a minimum of two posts per week, or 8 posts per month. 

 

3. Choose the right platform(s)

Do some research to make sure you are using the right platform(s). Different platforms will serve your business differently, whether it’s Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, or Youtube. Always research your target audience and where they are hanging out—that’s where you want to be posting. For example, Instagram is a more visual platform that is most popular amongst millennials. Facebook is more information-based, and that’s where you’ll find the widest age-range of viewers, including the most baby boomers than any other platform. If you are targeting baby boomers and posting to Instagram, you’re probably wasting a lot of your time! Of course, it’s great to post to multiple platforms and customize your content for each platform.  Working with an expert is a great way to prioritize the right platforms, and create engaging content for your business!

 

4. Use a scheduling tool

Scheduling your content calendars for posting through a social media scheduling tool such as  Agorapulse, Sendible, Later.com, Hootsuite, Buffer, or SproutSocial will save you a lot of time. All of these are integrated with the major social platforms and allow you to schedule social posts in advance, so you set it up and walk away knowing your content will roll out into live posts according to a schedule you lay out in your monthly content calendar. Which one to choose? Try one or two on a free trial to get a feel for the navigation and user experience of each, until you find one that feels easy for you.

 

5. Research and use hashtags

Do not overlook the importance of hashtags! Hashtags help users easily find posts with specific themes or content, so using the right hashtags on your posts could actually increase your organic reach and attract new followers. Spend a few minutes researching the different types of hashtags: find ones which match your content best, and have some engagement with users, but try to avoid any which are totally flooded with content.  Choosing relevant hashtags, not only to your type of business, but also to the specific post you’re making, will increase post visibility and visits to your page. Instagram limits hashtags to a maximum of 30 per post, but even just 3-5 hashtags can significantly increase the post’s visibility and potential for engagement.
