The Small Business Brand Guide:
How to build a brand that actually works.
If your brand feels off, it probably is.
You don’t need analytics to tell you, you can feel it. Something about your business just… isn’t landing. People visit your site, but they don’t reach out. You post consistently, but it’s not doing much. You look at competitors and think, why do they feel more legit than we do?
So you start tweaking things. New colours. New logo. Maybe even a new website. For a bit, it feels better. Then it slips right back to the same place.
Flat. Forgettable. Off.
Here are 6 practical tips to get your brand back on track.
Tip 1.
Trust your gut.
If something about your business is feeling off – but you just can’t put your finger on it – your feeling is probably right. You might be feeling like this :
– You’re explaining what you do over and over.
– Your marketing all feels like guesswork.
– You’re landing the wrong types of clients … or none at all.
– You keep running in circles changing things, but nothing is working.
Tip 2.
You don’t need more cosmetic changes.
Put away the visual ideas for just a second. Your brand isn’t just what you look like.
Your brand is how you talk, what you say, and the value that you promise you can offer someone. It’s the reason someone lands on your business and instantly wants it… or doesn’t.
It’s the difference between: “Oh, this looks fine” and “YES, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for!!”
Tip 3.
Get CLEAR about your purpose, your value, and WHO you are for.
Why do you exist? What do you offer that other businesses DON’T? Who do you service?
You need to know at least these three questions, and you need to KNOW your specific audience. Picture them, understand how they think and know what they’re struggling with.
Once you know the answers to these three things, use them to develop your elevator pitch.
Use your elevator pitch to tell people what you do, what you’re about, and why you even matter over the next guy who might be doing the same thing.
Tip 4.
Show up the same way — EVERYWHERE.
Once you have a look that feels right to you, and you’ve answered the above questions truly and honestly about your business offerings – share your WHY, and your VALUE, and your OFFERING messages over, and over, and over again. Use the same tone, the same brand look, and create a repeated, familiar experience.
Repetition builds recognition. Recognition builds trust. Trust builds relationships. Which, when done right, builds returning, loyal customers.
Tip 5.
Stay authentic.
Don’t embellish, don’t lie, don’t make promises you can’t keep. Audiences value a REAL brand, just like we value REAL people.
Real, authentic experiences build trust, and trust builds loyal customers and clients that will not only keep coming back, but who will advocate for your brand to others.
Tip 6.
Start now.
Stop waiting for perfection, becuase perfection will never happen.
Start with baby steps first. One thing at a time if you need to. Fix your homepage headline, your instagram bio, or just how you describe what you do.
Done gets feedback, and feedback gets clarity on what move to make next. The faster you put it out there, the faster you can refine what actually works.
